“The ‘Rose of the North’ ~ the city of Chiang Mai. This hub of Northern Thailand lies among the rolling foothills of the majestic Himalayan Mountains.”
-Amazing Thailand

The Northern Thailand wine region close to the Laos border, is probably the region with the most dramatic and varied natural scenery; from imposing mountains, to dense forests, perilous ridges and deep valleys, as well as the major city and tourist destination of Chiang Mai.

The vineyards and wineries of the North include the Mae Chan Winery in the Mae Chan Valley near Chiang Rai, the 240-acre Chateau de Loei amidst the rolling hills of the Loei Priovince and the smaller Chateau Shala One in Pichit Province. The pioneering Chateau de Loei winery near the border has been producing wines since 1995 and earns its wonderful reputation for quality under the guidance of Australian and French experts.  Chateau Shala One is known for its Shiraz, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Dramatic scenery, imposing mountains, dense forests and of course… a vineyard or two

Positioned at northern latitude of 17-18, the wineries here are found at altitudes ranging from 300-600 metres above sea level. The location puts the daytime temperatures at harvest time at around 20-25 degrees, dropping to a cool and comfortable 12 degrees at night.
