Loei

Overview

The Area: Loei

  •  The natural beauty of this area is a great reason to visit, the islands though are probably the best.
  • Diving in clear cool waters and discovering all sorts of fish and sights is my best memory.
  • The Chateau de Loei winery is certainly efficient and modern but maybe less warm than other more traditional wineries I’ve visited.

Local Attractions

NATIONAL PARK IN PHU RUEA

The National Park in Phu Ruea is quite famous in the region of Isan. You can enjoy some beautiful viewpoints, waterfalls, caves and pretty nursery gardens.

CHIANG KHAN

Beside the Mekong, at 48km in the North of Loei, there is a small city called Chiang Khan. This is a nice, traditional place that is not on many tourist agendas. There are two interesting temples: Wat Si Khun Mueang and Wat Tha Khaek, a very old temple.

But Loei and Phu Ruea are not very touristic. If you are looking for something authentic though, less touched by visitors and certainly not full of crowds, this could be an excellent reason to visit the region.

KHO TAO

The classic trip is to visit several islands in this area and more particularly Kho Tao, Kho Pha-Ngan and Kho Samui. Personally, I only had time to visit Kho Tao, in order to pass my PADI, a diving license. Kho Tao is a very popular destination for tourists; do not expect to have the same low costs that can be found elsewhere in Thailand. However, this small island and it incredible beaches are really splendid and absolutely worth it.

I went to Tarote Bay, on the other side of the island, a peaceful place with a wonderful beach. In the middle of the bay, a big stone stands (around 10 meters high) and if you are not afraid, you can climb on it and jump in the sea. Be warned though that this is a dangerous activity and must be taken very seriously.

The diving is nice and the instructors are very professional. I saw some barracudas, tiger fish, moon wrasses, butterfly fish and fantastic sights. You can also see sharks and turtles if you are luckier than I was!

Wines and Vines

Chateau de Loei
Located beside the main road of Phu Ruea, the first thing you will see of Chateau de Loei is its shop, which is almost like a supermarket; you can buy a great number of derived products here.

The vineyards and the winery are further into the countryside. The winery is huge, very modern and looks a bit like a factory. Although there is no guide, you actually learn a great deal as there is an informative big panel that explains the process of wine production. It does not look typical, but it is interesting.

Wine tasting here is quite limited as you may only be able to taste a small glass of a white wine and red wine. Indeed, they only open one bottle per day and it is recommended that to ensure a better tasting experience, you arrive in the morning or early afternoon.

The vines in the vineyards look older than the ones I had seen previously in Thailand. The vineyards look very European, even French. The vines are in a stretch and you can enjoy a beautiful view; the mountain, the lake, the vines, and e owners land/

Tastings:

1

Name:     Chateau de Loei

Region:   Phu Ruea

Class (red, white, rose): white

Grape:  Chenin Blanc

Vintage : 2008

Alcohol content: 12.5%

Colour : orange .

Taste: Acidity during the smelling. First, very acid then becoming very sweet. Tastes like a candy or an ananas. Not a favourite and the flavour was very unusual. The tastes did not meet the label of Chenin Blanc very well.

2

Name: Chateau de Loei

Region: Phu Ruea

Class: red

Grape: Shiraz

Vintage: 2010

Alcohol content: 12%

Taste: Wet wood, barrel but no balance. First taste is quite acidic and scratchy.  You can feel the berries and an after-taste of caramel, or Maple syrup. At the end, black cherry. Always though a certain bitter, dryness.
